A note from the editor!

For the first time since publishing this newsletter, I am late! What should have been released at the end of May is now finding its way through me in early June. I can list reasons for my tardiness— This August, I’m getting married to my beloved, Jesse French with my friends and family! This is proving to be a big emotional and spiritual portal that has demanded my attention.

The truth is I needed to let something breathe. And I’m sitting with the idea that this pause, this tending, isn’t actually a failure or being late at all — it might be the most honest thing I could do in service of what this newsletter is even for.

I get existentially overwhelmed when I think about who this newsletter is for — who is in the village? I don’t want it to be just for my friends or people I know. I want it to be for everyone who is sharing life together in the Nooksack Watershed. For everyone who shares my longing and wants to meet me there.

And still, I find myself asking why I do this. I’ve spent a lot of time journaling, sitting in silence, dancing about it, talking to friends — and at the end of the day I see that I am longing for something different than the status quo. A deep yearning to live in a world where we reach for each other for help, even when we don’t feel desperate for it, but because its lighter, more fun and more together. Where we are talking about things that are beautiful and also hard. Where we have the social technology to be in harmony through tension, grief, sorrow, joy, and growth.

For those of you finding this for the first time: the Village News of the Salish Sea is a monthly publication amplifying the voices of people who want to live more interdependently. We are in a collective and vulnerable practice of revealing the things we are asking for and offering. Like a virtual community bulletin board that is more than just jobs and housing. Like the local Craigslist for a more heart-centered and liberatory village.

And so I come back to publish this May/June edition with deep and genuine care for you all.

Community Grief Lodge

Please join Jen George & Micaela Musterer of Deeper Currents for an afternoon of remembering the potency of being in community with our tender hearts. This offering will be filled with song, movement, witnessing, being witnessed and an invitation to FEEL your grief in a new way.

WHAT IS COMMUNITY GRIEF LODGE?

A 5 hour community ritual, 15 minutes north of Bellingham, at Full Bloom Sanctuary. A place where we connect to our many forms of grief which include sorrow, confusion, numbness, anger, desire, longing, fear, etc. No prior experience in ritual or grief tending needed. This is open to anyone who is curious and open to exploring new and ancient ways of being with the complexity of the human experience.

Help Dre Survive While Fighting for Justice

Dre has been held in Whatcom County Jail for two years awaiting trial—no bail, no conviction, just endless postponements while he’s lost everything. Without legal help for his first year, he taught himself law and drained what little he had on court documents at 15 cents per page. Now with representation but no money on the outside, he’s asking our community for help affording basics: soup to supplement inadequate meals ($1.19), warm clothes, a haircut ($25), and calls to his mother in Canada ($7.50 for 15 minutes). $100-$200 a month will help him get what he needs. His family can’t help—they’re barely surviving themselves. Every dollar helps Dre maintain his dignity and keep fighting.

Weekly Soup Share

Greetings Fellow Villagers.

Through my journey of mamahood, I have been making a practice of diligently tending our hearth fire to nourish self and family. Ways I have been doing this are through building and tending fires inside our wood stove, growing and harvesting food and medicine and cooking and fermenting lots of food.

I’m curious to share this practice wider into the community in a way that is mutually supportive.

This fall and winter I am offering a weekly soup share for $13 a quart jar, up to 4 jars per family.

I’ll make a big pot of nourishing soup every Wednesday and you can either pick it up off my front porch or I’ll drop it on yours if you are within my range(I’m in Birchwood neighborhood)

I will also be making medicinal bone broth as needed with reishi and other mushrooms, locally harvested seaweed and herbs.

You can also order this for someone else who might need some extra nourishment, like post partum mamas or friends who are in the midst of illness.

Please text or email me if this would be supportive to you and your family. Include your name (if we haven’t linked before) food allergies, how many jars you want to start with and if you need delivery.

Please let know you want soup and/or broth any day except Wednesday because I’ll be cooking that day.

I am in need of housing as soon as possible. I need my own one-bedroom or studio space. I’m seeking quiet, calm, warmth, dryness, and covid safety in my living environment. It’s also important that the space be scent free, and laundry facilities would be a big plus.

It’s important for me to live near my community in Bellingham, so I would like to stay within city limits and preferably on the south side of town.

As a disabled, autistic person with very limited bandwidth, I ask that you reach out to my caseworker Julius, who is helping me find housing. We are looking for a new member of our rural community. We steward 12 beautiful acres in the Upper Skagit Valley (an hour from Bham). We practice permaculture and organic gardening, raising a significant amount of our own food. We are looking for community members or shorter term renters interested in sharing the work and efforts of living together collectively. We are looking for folks that have some experience with collective living and creating quality life together. Skills like gardening, crafts, building, etc. are appreciated as well. We avoid using personal products with fragrances or toxic ingredients, as we have members who are sensitive to chemicals. Housing would be renting a room in a shared, artistic, 3 bedroom house. Six other people live on the property, mostly in their own spaces. We have chickens, ducks and room for larger livestock if someone has knowledge and husbandry skills.

This month, Jesse had his 41st birthday. As much as we are both so fed and feel such a great sense of goodness each month when we host the potluck gathering for Shabat, this month, Jesse decided to have a more intimate gathering of his closest friends.

And so there won’t be a big one this month. We both hope that this does not stop you from observing the day of rest every week of the month and taking it as an opportunity to gather community together and observe the Sacred.

Next Shabat is May 8. See you there.

We are looking for a new member of our rural community. We steward 12 beautiful acres in the Upper Skagit Valley (an hour from Bham). We practice permaculture and organic gardening, raising a significant amount of our own food. We are looking for community members or shorter term renters interested in sharing the work and efforts of living together collectively. We are looking for folks that have some experience with collective living and creating quality life together. Skills like gardening, crafts, building, etc. are appreciated as well. We avoid using personal products with fragrances or toxic ingredients, as we have members who are sensitive to chemicals. Housing would be renting a room in a shared, artistic, 3 bedroom house. Community Grief Lodge is a land-based, community-fed relational and musical healing space. In this sacred container we welcome in the multi-faceted expressions of grief, joy, anger, desire, fear, longing (etc.) — emotions that are so often suppressed and stuck in our bodies — to be honored, expressed and, ultimately, transformed in the sacred witness of others.

A Prayer for Our Sacred Waters

A prayer for our sacred waters within that bathe our organs, hydrate our cells, allow our blood and our tears to flow. A prayer for our sacred waters that are record keepers, holding our thoughts, words, prayers, and intentions, circulating them through the sacred cycle of condensation, precipitation, and evaporation.

A prayer for our sacred waters that are our first home, first medicine, first sacred element, and resource within our mothers wombs that held, and protected us for 7, 8, 9 moon cycles. A prayer for our sacred waters that are the feminine, the receptive, the flowing, intuitive nature within all.

And a prayer for the sacred waters without, for the creeks and streams that are being restored to thriving ecosystems so native plants and animals can return. A prayer for the rivers that flow from sacred headwaters, carving ancestor stones in their paths, providing safe space for salmon to return to their sacred spawning grounds.

A prayer for the mist and the rain and the fog that provide moisture for the great standing ones, the cedars, oaks, pines, and redwoods. A prayer for the cellular waters that flow within the veins of each and every plant, supporting its structure, strength, and flexibility.

A prayer for the rivers’ flow that meets the ocean, the great convergence where fresh water meets salt water. A prayer for the oceans, for thriving, clean, vital aquatic ecosystems, and for the whales, the gentle giants of the oceans, the record keepers of our planet who share the stories through sacred

Help Dre Survive While Fighting for Justice

Dre has been held in Whatcom County Jail for two years awaiting trial—no bail, no conviction, just endless postponements while he’s lost everything. Without legal help for his first year, he taught himself law and drained what little he had on court documents at 15 cents per page. Now with representation but no money on the outside, he’s asking our community for help affording basics: soup to supplement inadequate meals ($1.19), warm clothes, a haircut ($25), and calls to his mother in Canada ($7.50 for 15 minutes). $100-$200 a month will help him get what he needs. His family can’t help—they’re barely surviving themselves. Every dollar helps Dre maintain his dignity and keep fighting.

Greetings Fellow Villagers.

Through my journey of mamahood, I have been making a practice of diligently tending our hearth fire to nourish self and family. Ways I have been doing this are through building and tending fires inside our wood stove, growing and harvesting food and medicine and cooking and fermenting lots of food.

I’m curious to share this practice wider into the community in a way that is mutually supportive.

This fall and winter I am offering a weekly soup share for $13 a quart jar, up to 4 jars per family.

I’ll make a big pot of nourishing soup every Wednesday and you can either pick it up off my front porch or I’ll drop it on yours if you are within my range(I’m in Birchwood neighborhood)

I will also be making medicinal bone broth as needed with reishi and other mushrooms, locally harvested seaweed and herbs.

You can also order this for someone else who might need some extra nourishment, like post partum mamas or friends who are in the midst of illness.

I wanted to see how we began, and why.

I followed those blood-roots threading that primeval forest back into soil, roots rising like fins from the first sea of earth. I watched trees break out from the flanks of the mountains as if for the very first time, tethered by vines like teeth trailing strings of saliva from the opening jaws of some beast who yawned its very first hunger at the beginning of all.

How did we ever break from such holding?

And the longing I feel —isn’t that some kind of knowing?

Inside a waterfall, I felt how the stone was caressed, constantly, without break, forever, like a heart always open, always broken. I thought, if you died in the jungle, you would die by drowning.

Coming out, I got lost for a minute and was scared. I thought I’d evolved too far away. I could not find where I’d gone wrong. But a lizard eyed me, stopped me in my tracks, and I looked back.

When people talk about consciousness, what do they even mean?

What is it? Why are we here? What’s going to become of us? Can we really lose everything, and then it will just be gone?

The innocence that makes the trees gigantic, that makes their roots swim. The frogs made of glass. And there again — another invention of hummingbird, time stopping in air.

I found my way home that day. The idea that we cannot cross back, that we cannot return to a paradise, to wholeness — that is someone else’s religion, not mine. Time used to turn with the seasons.

Life used to be a circle, and it will be again.

You’re invited to join a co-created grief support circle to explore, express and be in community around grief. We experience so many moments of grief (big and small) throughout our lives and we long to create a present space for us to express openly and freely.

We live in a culture that teaches us to hide our grief and sorrow. Often our grief isn’t welcome in community spaces or even in our most intimate relationships. It can feel radical to gather in community to explore grief’s edges, yet many have a longing to not do it alone.

This 12-week container was intentionally designed for those who are unfamiliar with turning toward their own grief in more connected ways and/or in community. There are ancient, more connected ways to be with our grief than what we were taught. In this series we will gather to discuss and explore simple & gentle ways to be with personal and collective grief.

Egalitarian Intentional Communities

D​o you have vision for living in community with a focus on sharing resources and relating intentionally and compassionately with each other and the land? While all intentional communities utilize some degree of expense sharing, a handful of them use a radical economic model called “income sharing.” Income sharing brings with it a number of practical and ideological benefits, as well as unique challenges, as it forges a new path towards reimagining our relationship with collective resources.

About a year ago, I started working with an organization called Radical Communal Groups, whose aim is to support the formation and sustenance of egalitarian intentional residential communities in Western Washington.

Please join me in welcoming my friend and fellow RCG member Sky Blue, a longtime intentional communities activist, for a presentation and discussion on the work of RCG so far and an in-depth look at the what, why, and how of income sharing. We'll be convening at the

Weekly Soup Share

Greetings Fellow Villagers.

Through my journey of mamahood, I have been making a practice of diligently tending our hearth fire to nourish self and family. Ways I have been doing this are through building and tending fires inside our wood stove, growing and harvesting food and medicine and cooking and fermenting lots of food.

I’m curious to share this practice wider into the community in a way that is mutually supportive.

This fall and winter I am offering a weekly soup share for $13 a quart jar, up to 4 jars per family.

I’ll make a big pot of nourishing soup every Wednesday and you can either pick it up off my front porch or I’ll drop it on yours if you are within my range(I’m in Birchwood neighborhood)

I will also be making medicinal bone broth as needed with reishi and other mushrooms, locally harvested seaweed and herbs.

You can also order this for someone else who might need some extra nourishment, like post partum mamas or friends who are in the midst of illness.

Morgan is a wonderful human being experiencing both housing insecurity and medical demands at the same time. In Mid March, they will be having a necessary surgery that will put them into unpaid medical leave from Mid March to the End of May/Mid June. It’s important for me to live near my community in Bellingham, so I would like to stay within city limits and preferably on the south side of town.

We are looking for a new member of our rural community. We steward 12 beautiful acres in the Upper Skagit Valley (an hour from Bham). We practice permaculture and organic gardening, raising a significant amount of our own food. We are looking for community members or shorter term renters interested in sharing the work and efforts of living together collectively. We are looking for folks that have some experience with collective living and creating quality life together. Skills like gardening, crafts, building, etc. are appreciated as well. We avoid using personal products with fragrances or toxic ingredients, as we have members who are sensitive to chemicals. Housing would be renting a room in a shared, artistic, 3 bedroom house. Six other people live on the property, mostly in their own spaces. We have chickens, ducks and room for larger livestock if someone has knowledge and husbandry skills.

Please join us in community for an afternoon of circling, singing, sharing, and sacred co-created ritual. Whether you are new to grieving with others or are familiar with the practice of tending grief, Community Grief Lodge offers local community a space to tend to the many forms of grief that we hold inside us.

Community Grief Lodge is a land-based, community-fed relational and musical healing space. In this ritual container we welcome in the multi-faceted expressions of grief, joy, anger, desire, fear, longing (etc.) — emotions that are so often suppressed and stuck in our bodies — to be honored, expressed and tenderly held by others. No need to be ‘experienced’ in the ways of ritual, rhythm and music, or ‘good’ at grief-tending to participate — this space is open to anyone who feels called to explore and express the depths of their humanness, together. Whatever you’re carrying, you don’t have to carry it alone.

In this small group (10 max), we’ll

creatively explore our personal
lineage and the ways it’s shaped us:
the stories we’ve been handed, the

Cozy Community Hang and Shabbat Dinner

Weekly Soup Share

Greetings Fellow Villagers.

Through my journey of mamahood, I have been making a practice of diligently tending our hearth fire to nourish self and family. Ways I have been doing this are through building and tending fires inside our wood stove, growing and harvesting food and medicine and cooking and fermenting lots of food.

I’m curious to share this practice wider into the community in a way that is mutually supportive.

This fall and winter I am offering a weekly soup share for $13 a quart jar, up to 4 jars per family.

I’ll make a big pot of nourishing soup every Wednesday and you can either pick it up off my front porch or I’ll drop it on yours if you are within my range(I’m in Birchwood neighborhood)

I will also be making medicinal bone broth as needed with reishi and other mushrooms, locally harvested seaweed and herbs.

You can also order this for someone else who might need some extra nourishment, like post partum mamas or friends who are in the midst of illness.

Please text or email me if this would be supportive to you and your family. Include your name (if we haven’t linked before) food allergies, how many jars you want to start with and if you need delivery.

Hello village community!

I am in need of housing as soon as possible. I need my own one-bedroom or studio space. I’m seeking quiet, calm, warmth, dryness, and covid safety in my living environment. It’s also important that the space be scent free, and laundry facilities would be a big plus.

It’s important for me to live near my community in Bellingham, so I would like to stay within city limits and preferably on the south side of town.

As a disabled, autistic person with very limited bandwidth, I ask that you reach out to my caseworker Julius, who is helping me find housing. We are looking for a new member of our rural community. We steward 12 beautiful acres in the Upper Skagit Valley (an hour from Bham). We practice permaculture and organic gardening, raising a significant amount of our own food. We are looking for community members or shorter term renters interested in sharing the work and efforts of living together collectively. We are looking for folks that have some experience with collective living and creating quality life together. Skills like gardening, crafts, building, etc. are appreciated as well. We avoid using personal products with fragrances or toxic ingredients, as we have members who are sensitive to chemicals. Housing would be renting a room in a shared, artistic, 3 bedroom house. Six other people live on the property, mostly in their own spaces. We have chickens, ducks and room for larger livestock if someone has knowledge and husbandry skills.

People’s Movement Work Looking For Space

Do you have some spare garage/shop/work space that you’d like to put to use to support art for people’s movement work?

A pair of crafty people are searching for a place to set up a small screen printing operation! Their main focus is supporting local and Seattle-based antiwar/anticapitalist & pro-people orgs to make t-shirts, prints, and other materials. Most of their work is done for free, including procuring blank materials to print on, so they don’t have much of a budget to work with; if you’re able to offer space for no/low cost, that would be incredible! If space could also be used for non-printing-related storage, they could potentially afford a bit more in rent, as it could replace a small storage unit they’re currently renting. We are looking for a new member of our rural community. We steward 12 beautiful acres in the Upper Skagit Valley (an hour from Bham). We practice permaculture and organic gardening, raising a significant amount of our own food. We are looking for community members or shorter term renters interested in sharing the work and efforts of living together collectively. We are looking for folks that have some experience with collective living and creating quality life together. Skills like gardening, crafts, building, etc. are appreciated as well. We avoid using personal products with fragrances or toxic ingredients, as we have members who are sensitive to chemicals. Housing would be renting a room in a shared, artistic, 3 bedroom house. Six other people live on the property, mostly in their own spaces. We have chickens, ducks and room for larger livestock if someone has knowledge and husbandry skills.

A pair of crafty people are searching for a place to set up a small screen printing operation! Their main focus is supporting local and Seattle-based antiwar/anticapitalist & pro-people orgs to make t-shirts, prints, and other materials. Most of their work is done for free, including procuring blank materials to print on, so they don’t have much of a budget to work with; if you’re able to offer space for no/low cost, that would be incredible! If space could also be used for non-printing-related storage, they could potentially afford a bit more in rent, as it could replace a small storage unit they’re currently renting.
